TheHit.in — a Hindi news platform built for Chhattisgarh

A regional Hindi news brand needed to publish to the web, iOS and Android from one newsroom, fast enough to matter on a breaking story and light enough to open on a district 4G connection. We built the platform, the apps and the editorial tooling behind it.

The brief

What we were asked to solve.

TheHit.in publishes Hindi news for Chhattisgarh — state politics, courts, crime, sport, entertainment and district reporting. The audience is overwhelmingly mobile, often on a mid-range Android handset outside the metros, and it arrives in bursts when something breaks.

The brief was a single publishing platform: a fast Hindi-first website, native apps on both stores, and a newsroom back end that a working journalist can use from a phone at a court hearing without training.

The hard parts

Where this project was genuinely difficult.

CHALLENGE 01Hindi typography that survives a small screen

Devanagari renders very differently from Latin type. Line height, matra clearance and font fallbacks all had to be set deliberately, or headlines clip on the exact devices most of the audience uses.

CHALLENGE 02Traffic that spikes without warning

A verdict or an arrest can take traffic from steady to a multiple of normal within minutes. The stack had to absorb that without the newsroom having to do anything.

CHALLENGE 03Two apps, one newsroom

Reporters were never going to maintain the site and the apps separately. Everything had to publish once and appear everywhere.

CHALLENGE 04Geography as a first-class dimension

A reader in Bastar wants Bastar news. Category alone was not enough — the district had to be part of how content is filed and found.

What we built

The product, feature by feature.

01

The publishing platform

  • Editorial CMS with role-based access for editors, reporters and contributors
  • Article workflow: draft, review, schedule, publish, with revision history
  • One publish action that pushes to web, iOS and Android simultaneously
  • Rich media handling — images, embeds and galleries, auto-optimised on upload
  • Author profiles, so every story carries a real byline and a journalist page
  • SEO fields per article: slug, meta description, social card, schema
02

Reader-facing structure

  • Category sections — Top News, State & City, Entertainment, Sports, International, and the Solah Duni Aath opinion column
  • District-wise browsing across the state: Balod, Baloda Bazar-Bhatapara, Balrampur-Ramanujganj, Bastar, Bemetara, Bijapur, Bilaspur, Dantewada, Dhamtari, Gariaband and the rest
  • Trending Now, computed from live reading behaviour rather than set by hand
  • Infinite “load more” feed rather than numbered pagination
  • WhatsApp channel integration for readers who want alerts where they already are
  • A “Write for TheHit.in” contributor pipeline with its own submission flow
03

The mobile apps

  • Native app experience on iOS and Android from a shared codebase
  • Push notifications for breaking news, segmented by category and district
  • Offline reading of already-loaded articles for patchy connections
  • Bookmark and share flows tuned for WhatsApp, the dominant sharing channel
  • Font-size controls, because a large part of the readership is over 45
  • App size kept deliberately small for entry-level Android devices
Approach

How we ran it.

STEP 01

Newsroom study

We sat with the editorial team to see how a story actually moves from tip-off to publish. The CMS was designed around that, not around a generic blog model.

STEP 02

Hindi-first design

Type scale, spacing and components were designed in Devanagari from the first wireframe, never designed in English and translated afterwards.

STEP 03

Platform build

Publishing back end, web front end and the two apps, developed in parallel against a single content API.

STEP 04

Launch and iterate

Shipped to both stores, then tuned push segmentation, feed ranking and district navigation on the back of real reading data.

DELIVEREDWhat shipped

  • One newsroom publishing to three surfaces from a single action.
  • District-level navigation across the whole of Chhattisgarh, so local readers get local news.
  • Breaking-news push segmented by category and district instead of blasting everyone.
  • A contributor pipeline that lets the brand scale coverage beyond its core staff.
