Cargo insurance is normally a broker, a PDF and a two-day wait. Route Insured issues a policy digitally, in one sitting, from an app. We built the platform, the apps and the policy issuance engine.
Route Insured covers goods in transit — by road, rail, air and sea — against accident, theft, fire and natural calamity, for both domestic and international movement.
The market it is attacking is a paperwork market. A consignor wanting single-transit cover typically goes through a broker and waits. The brief was to compress that into a 100% paperless flow that issues a policy while the truck is still being loaded.
Consignor, consignee, commodity, packing, mode, route, sum insured, invoice value. On a phone. The form design was the product design.
A policy with the wrong sum insured or route is worthless at claim time. Validation had to be strict without being obstructive.
A policy certificate has to be generated, numbered, stored and delivered in seconds, and be retrievable months later when a claim happens.
An occasional consignor sending one shipment, and a logistics operator issuing policies daily. The same flow had to serve both.
We went through the existing manual proposal form field by field and worked out what could be derived, defaulted or dropped.
The multi-step flow was prototyped and tested on a phone before any back end existed — on this product the form is the experience.
